We used this connected design system towards the Yangtze as an illustrative instance. The N inputs to plants in the Yangtze River basin revealed large spatial variability. Our results indicate that approximately 6,000 Gg of N entered all rivers for the Yangtze basin from crop production as dissolved inorganic N (DIN) in 2012. 50 % of this quantity is from the production of solitary rice, wheat, and vegetables, where artificial fertilizers had been mainly used.
