The distinctive, loud rattling call of the belted kingfisher is one of the first things you’ll notice when watching your local waterways. These fish-eating birds often perch high on snags or on a pole over a stream or river and plunge headfirst into the water to grab a meal. They are found throughout most of the United States and Canada in all seasons, although they are less common on Prince Edward Island.
