The distinctive, loud rattling call of the belted kingfisher is one of the first things you’ll notice when watching your local waterways. These fish-eating birds often perch high on snags or on a pole over a stream or river and plunge headfirst into the water to grab a meal. They are found throughout most of the United States and Canada in all seasons, although they are less common on Prince Edward Island. In the wild, kingfishers live most of their lives as loners until mating season comes around. They are monogamous, and pairs mate for life. Court
