Rocket League, despite appearances, is a very deep and multifaceted title. Here are some useful tips to give your best on the playing field.

Two teams of radio-controlled cars, two doors, a field and of course a sphere of considerable size. The goal? Beat the opposing team, just like in every normal football game, sending the ball into the net. The mechanics behind Rocket League are summarized in this brief incipit and, as you may have noticed, are extremely simple and immediately compred. However, it only takes a few games to realize that the game is more complicated than it seems, both from the point of view of control of the car and, consequently, of the ball, and from a strategic point of view.

The goal of this guide is to provide advice that, regardless of your level of experience, can come in handy and that you can try to put into practice right away, during your next Rocket League game.

CAMERA SETTINGS

Before getting into the heart of the action, it is strongly recommended to enter the Options menu and change the camera's default settings. The parameters we propose, also used by the Champions of the Rocket League Championship Series, will immediately improve your view on the field of play and allow you to follow the movements of opponents and teammates more easily.

Let's see the most relevant changes:

Oscillation: Disabled. This eliminates the screen's flickering effects, increasing the cleanliness and stability of the frame.

Field of view: 100-110°. By increasing the field of view, the portion of field framed by the camera is also increased. A wider view inevitably ensures a more complete view of the game.

Distance: 260-300. Increasing the distance between the camera and your car gives you a clearer view of what's going on around our car.

Height: 110. Useful especially when the ball is in front of your car. With this change, the view is slightly raised, so you can see the opponent's movements beyond the ball.

Angle: -3/-4. It guarantees a good view of the field without losing the "focus" on your car.

Stiffness: 0.4-0.5. The camera follows the movements of its machine more rigidly, especially during drifts and strong accelerations.

Of course, all settings can be changed according to your preferences, but we recommend that you consider, at least broadly speaking, the directions we have just brought back to you to enjoy a better gaming experience.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ABILITIES

Once the camera parameters have been fixed, we are ready to take the field and put our skills on the play. Remember that Rocket League is a pure skill game, and no item can give you an advantage over your opponents. First, then, it is good to distinguish the two skill categories present in the game:

Physical skills: everything related to the control of the machine and the ball. This category includes shots, passes, parades, dribbles, aerials, until freestyle. All these skills can be trained directly in the game or, more selectively, through personalized training, available in the appropriate section in the main menu of the game.

Mental Skills: The set of all skills related to strategy, field position and interaction with teammates and opponents. Our guide focuses on precisely this kind of skill, since within the game you will not find anyone who will tell you how to be on the pitch, but only teammates ready to criticize you for the first mistake made.

To climb the boards of the new tournament system or to rank up in the Rocket League competitive system, it is necessary to develop in parallel the two categories mentioned above.

Since we have said that we want to focus this guide on mental skills, let's start with a very simple concept, but which, unfortunately, is often forgotten: Rocket League is a game based on football, and not American football. The goal, therefore, is not to gain meters by simply pushing the ball forward, but rather to try to keep possession of the ball, with the aim of building an action aimed at the goal. Clearly, at first, we're all fascinated by the huge flashing ball bouncing free around the playing field, and our first thought was, "Now I use all the turbo I have in the tank and take it!" and then, in most cases, miss it resoundingly.

One of the best strategies in the game, in fact, is to wait for the opponent to make a mistake, and then punish him on the counter-attack. This does not mean waiting for the ball in goal, but rather trying to apply a constant pressing, so that the opponent feels, precisely, under pressure. Especially in the 2vs2 and 3vs3, a rotating team member must always be on the ball.

POSITIONING ON THE PITCH

The concept of rotation is fundamental in Rocket League, and you could write an entire article to explain how it works in detail. In short, however, we can try to get around this definition by saying that there are no roles in rocket league. If a player in defense rejects the opposing action, then he automatically becomes the new attacker; as a result, the player playing in attack must take the place of the teammate in defense and be ready to support the action from behind. This technique allows you to have a total and constant coverage on the pitch and is therefore the basis of the correct positioning on the field. It is clearly difficult, if not impossible, to give general indications of the position to be taken on the pitch, precisely because it depends first and foremost on the playing field.

However, the key to trying to be in the right place at the right time is to be aware not only of the position of opponents, but above all of your teammates. The first rule, in fact, is to give space to your teammate, especially when he is in possession of the ball. Getting in two, or even three, chasing the ball is the best way to take goals on the counter-attack. In the same way, however, this space must not be excessive either, so that we can always be ready to intervene in the action and support the pressing, mentioned above.

That said, if your teammates are still novice and haven't deigned to read our invaluable guide, they may not be aware of everything we've talked about so far. In this case, it will be up to you to adapt to their behavior, perhaps opting for a more defensive approach, leaving them at the mercy of their obsessive pursuit of the ball.

Rocket League is a game where you inevitably have to interact with other players. Often, trying to predict the moves of opponents and teammates and adapt to their style of play is much more useful than proving that you can take a ball into the air after making two flicks and four screws. As we have already said, however, training and experience are fundamental to climbing the rankings of the game, and the only theory, of which you have made a good difference by reading this article, will not be enough to make you better players.
