Maternal metabolism and intrauterine conditions influence development of health and disease in offspring, leading to metabolic, physiologic, and/or epigenetic adaptation of the fetus. Maternal gestational diabetes (GDM) leads to higher incidence of obesity and type 2 diabetes in offspring. We have previously shown that fetuses of insulin-resistant mothers with GDM have a delayed reaction to auditory stimuli in the postprandial state, indicating a fetal central insulin resistance.
