Poly(l-cysteine)s with methylthio pendants (PMTLCs) were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of a new l-cysteine-based N-carboxyanhydride. The thioether bonds of PMTLC can be readily oxidized by H2O2 yielding water-soluble PMTLCOX.
