Leishmania parasites must deal with stressful environmental conditions (thermal, nutritional and oxidative) along their digenetic life cycles. This requires drastic changes in gene expression, which in this parasite occurs mainly through post-transcriptional mechanisms involving RNA binding proteins (RBPs). PUF proteins, a class of RBPs existing in most eukaryotic organisms, might play too an essential role modulating the fate of mRNAs and regulating gene expression in Leishmania parasites.
